How we built Ramp’s WFH Stipend Spend program

Your home office should work as hard as you do.

Ramp has offices in New York, Miami, San Francisco, and now Boston. We have a strong in-office culture, with about 70% of the company coming in regularly. So much so, that we run out of office space every ~6 months and keep having to expand our floor plans (I just need more conference rooms, plz)

But even those who love being in the office tend to work from home at least once a week.

That’s why every full-time Ramp employee receives a $500 Work-From-Home stipend on their first day. It’s a one-time fund to help create a workspace that’s comfortable, functional, and actually supports the way you work—whether that’s an ergonomic chair, a second monitor, or a desk setup that fits your space.

We want every new hire to feel set up for success from day one, no matter where they’re working from.

Here’s exactly how we implement our WFH Stipend spend program at Ramp:

How much?

  • $500 per employee
  • One-time allocation that doesn’t renew

How is it issued?

  • Auto-issued to every employee during onboarding
  • Guidance is that purchases must be made after the start date

Any restrictions?

  • Yes, funds can only be spent on a handful of relevant categories, like Office supplies & Electronics
  • Employees can spend the funds using any relevant payment method: Physical Ramp card, virtual card, and reimbursements are available
  • Since this stipend is targeted for new hires, the funds auto-lock 12 months after they’re issued

Automate accounting fields?

  • Every transaction is automatically booked to the Office Supplies expense account in NetSuite

What’s needed after spend?

  • Receipts, memos, and correct accounting codes are required at submission
  • All transactions require direct manager approval

As I’ve said before, Spend Programs are one of Ramp’s most underrated features. They make it easy to issue and manage company funds, whether for coffee, wellness benefits, WFH stipends, or travel per diems.

It’s a thoughtful perk, and a great first chance for new hires to see how Ramp works in action.

We just used it for our company wide retreat to cover the travel incidentals (including Uber) and it has been dreamy! I got the idea from doing a WFH stipend like this. Just one more reason I love Ramp - you can tell it was created for both sides - accountants and the users.
