When looking at the accounting export fields, there is a line memo option. Where does this get populated from?
Hey Roy! The line memo field in accounting exports can be customized to include various transaction details, like employee name, reference number, merchant, and other data points. The exact content depends on how your accounting export is configured and what your accounting software supports.
Hope that helps - but let me know if not!
How do you customize line memos to include those items?
Hi Roy!
-
If you want employees to handle this, you could require a memo in your team’s expense policy.
(Policy → Expense Requirements → select the policy, and make “memo” a requirement).
-
If you’d prefer the accounting team to select the line memos, they can do that directly on the accounting page.

Charlotte,
So doing what you suggested populates Memo content type for exporting but I haven’t seen how we can populate data for Line Memo.
Ah, sorry, Roy - I think I understand your question now!
If you’re trying to do this for transactions, the only way to add custom line memos is by splitting the transaction. Line memos can’t be applied to a standard (non-split) transaction — only to the individual lines once it’s been split. Example of this below:
For Bill Pay, you can break out the bill into line items, and that’s where you’re able to add custom line memos as well.
I get that it’s a bit confusing, especially since the option appears in the dropdown for regular transactions but isn’t actually applicable there. I’ll pass that feedback along to the team.
Please let me know if this still doesn’t answer your question!
For our accounting software, we can’t do an either or for the field that would bring in Line Memos. Would it be possible to allow this for unsplit transactions as well?
Roy - I will submit that request for unsplit transactions to our Product team!
Is this something other customers would like to see? Please let me know below
